Baptism & Thanksgiving

The birth of a baby is always a cause for celebration!

As the parish church for Kirk Sandall & Edenthorpe, we invite everyone to give thanks for the birth of their child, and explore baptism if they want to.

Many are overcome by a sense of awe at the creation of new life and want to express their thanks to God.  We’ll invite you to a simple celebration Thanksgiving Service where you and your family can come to church and thank God for the gift of your baby.

This type of service presents no assumptions or expectations regarding the faith or lifestyle of the family who take part and requires no promises from them – exactly what many are looking for – while still ensuring you can thank God for and celebrate the gift of your child as part of our main Sunday service.

Anyone wishing to talk more about a service of thanksgiving should contact Tom (the Vicar) and we can arrange this over the phone.

While a thanksgiving service is ideal for those still weighing up their faith, a baptism is something quite different.

Baptism is when someone's chosen to follow Jesus day-by-day and week-by-week

Baptism signifies that someone has decided to follow Jesus, an outward sign that shows someone knows they need their sins to be forgiven and are committed to following Jesus as their king. We love to celebrate when someone makes that commitment

In the Bible, new believers were baptised publicly in a river. This was part of their public committment to follow Jesus, and was often a costly decision not to be entered into lightly.

As a church we help you to work through some preparation sessions, spending time thinking about the Christian faith and what it means to know and trust Jesus as our King and Saviour.

For those wishing to baptise their children, this includes thinking through the commitment to Jesus Christ that parents and godparents must publicly declare, as well as looking at what it will mean to raise the child within the church family.

Baptism is an outward sign that shows someone knows they need their sins to be forgiven, and are committed to following Jesus as their king.

Each baptism service takes place as part of our main Sunday service.

If you’d like to find out more, the first step is to come along one Sunday morning, speak to one of the team afterwards, and start attending regularly.
